Mindful Stress Relief with Nature

When's the last time you unplugged from technology and immersed yourself in the wilderness? In this blog post, you'll hear about "forest bathing," a mindfulness practice to release stress and re-balance your system.

The Importance of Releasing Stress

Stress happens. It's part of life. If you're like most of my clients, you are a busy professional who is juggling multiple demanding projects, taking care of personal and family responsibilities, and processing a continuous stream of incoming data

The combination of information overload and being constantly tethered to technology can leave you feeling spiritually disconnected and energetically depleted.

According to the American Institute of Stress, there are 50 known symptoms of chronic stress, including

  • Diminished sexual desire or performance
  • Feelings of loneliness or worthlessness
  • Excess anxiety, worry, guilt, nervousness
  • Increased anger, frustration, hostility
  • Depression, frequent or wild mood swings
  • Insomnia, nightmares, disturbing dreams
  • Difficulty concentrating, racing thoughts
  • Forgetfulness, disorganization, confusion
  • Increased frustration, irritability, edginess
  • Reduced work efficiency or productivity

If you've experienced one or more of these symptoms, you can benefit from the following mindful practice to reduce your stress by connecting with the healing power of Nature.

Did You Know...

Walking in Nature has been shown to decrease stress and help you clear your mind. The Japanese art of "forest bathing" is gaining popularity because of the significant scientific evidence to validate the physiological benefits of this practice.

The Center for Environment, Health and Field Sciences in Japan’s Chiba Universitymeasured the effects of forest bathing on research subject's cortisol levels, blood pressure, pulse rate, and heart rate variability.

They compared the subject's measured responses from a day in the city, and contrasted those same bio-metrics after a 30-minute forest visit. Here's what they found:

"Forest environments promote lower concentrations of cortisol, lower pulse rate, lower blood pressure, greater parasympathetic nerve activity, and lower sympathetic nerve activity than do city environments,” the study concluded. In other words, being in Nature brings your system into greater harmony, balance, and coherence.

Suggested Mindfulness Activity

Here's how you can mindfully tap into the healing powers of Nature.

  • Block some time and turn off your cell phone.
  • Find your nearest park, wooded trail, or even a collection of neighborhood trees (of course, the more dense the forest, the better).
  • Spend at least 30 minutes walking or even sitting quietly in Nature, breathing fully and deeply, and observing your surroundings.
  • Listen to the sounds of the birds, the wind through the trees, the animals rustling in the brush.
  • Notice how your body feels before, during and after.
  • Repeat often!

The Benefit of One-on-One Sessions for Stress Management

In addition to forest bathing, you can get lasting relief from long-standing issues that are exacerbated by stress with Mindfulness Coaching and Hypnotherapy.

Individual sessions allow you to enter into a highly relaxed state. As your nervous system gently settles and calms, you gain valuable insights about your self, your goals, and your life purpose.

You can choose either in-person and virtual sessions via Zoom. Both include a customized hypnotic audio recording made just for you, which you listen to at home on a daily basis after your session. Repeated listening lets you refocus your mind and reinforce your optimal state so you can perform at your best.
